You guys might also like to try using my new, free app TweetSpotter to organize spontaneous meetups among yourselves. All you need is your Twitter account.
It's a bit hard to explain what TweetSpotter does, but it basically organizes tweets by conversations (like a web forum), and conversations by location, like a virtual neighborhood bulletin board. So for example, at WWDC, you might use TweetSpotter to tweet out an invite to go somewhere for drinks to talk about [Topic X]. Other people at WWDC using TweetSpotter will be able to see your tweet and respond to your invite.
is there now some kind of iPhone Dev SDK meet-up or not?
Since there are so many parties and gatherings already filling up every available hour in the evenings, why not organize a meetup within one of these events? sfMacIndie on Sunday looks like a good candidate since it'll give people a chance to meet each other before the conference begins and coordinate activities for the rest of the week. Just establish a meeting spot within Jillian's--someone can wear an identifying shirt, print a table placard, or tweet the location. I'd offer to host but I have other things going on that day and don't know what time I'll make it there.
This is my first visit to this area (Union Square) in San Francisco. I'm staying at the Parc 55. I'm from Boston. Does anyone else feel that this area of the city is underprotected? I barely see any police. I'm constantly asked for money (at least 3 times everyday on my way to the Moscone Center) and today I thought I was going to get jumped. The guy snuck up behind me and kept asking me for money. When I told him I didn't have any cash, he asked me if I could go to an ATM. I really don't want to be here anymore.
The conference is great but maybe I will just order the videos next year.

I totally agree with you! the first couple of days (first time at wwdc and in san fran) i was pretty freaked and didn't really want to go out past 7pm, i even saw saw guy getting the crap kicked out of him in an ally and when i went to see if the police were around to tell someone NO ONE was there!

As a local, this is my 2 cents.
San Francisco is a "homeless friendly" city, so a lot of homeless come to SF from surrounding areas.
They may look aggressive, but in reality, they don't do much damage. You can simply (and safely) ignore them as you walk by. Do not respond to their respond like "I don't have cash". Just keep on walking.
I am a local and I am used to those homeless. They don't bother me at all.
And occasionally, you will see some homeless people whom you would willingly give money to - like those who are performing music at (underground) Muni/BART stations. There are people with amazing talent. In that case, please do drop a dollar or two.

Oh common guys.... what that all about? I am staying 500m from union square and I don't seem threatened at all. While I agree that there's plenty of homeless guys floating around begging for money, I don't think that the area is dangerous. I've been out on the streets several times after midnight and had no problem or fear... and it's my first time in US. I felt save. I even love some of the homeless guys... those who tend to push their presentation on the street.
There I met a homeless guy and he was playing awesome blues on his guitar... he was funny and very positive and he gave me a guitar to play 2-3 tunes there while he took a smoke... I've earned him some money . That was fun. And I love the trumpet and sax guy. And there was one was playing with cooking dishes... priceless.
I do know some can be pain in the *** but common after all they're also humans and probably they also have a family and so on... Not everything works out for everybody. I tried to give away some sort of help to each and everyone if I could... you can't always help, but if there's a buck or two lying in my pocket I am glad to help them out. And I don't earn a lot of money. I hardly managed to got me over for WWDC.
BTW: I'm loving it. the city, the surrounding areas, the people, the WWDC. i'll be definitely coming back next year! such a shame I have to leave tomorrow. i've been to quite some cities around the world and San Francisco is definitely on the top of my list!

Quite possibly the mistake I made was talking. I wasn't around other people and had macbook pro on me which freaked me out even more. I just had never had someone be so persistent before.
The locals that play music are great. There was one guy that was playing drums yesterday. He is extremely talented... I did leave him some cash. I also offered a homeless guy my breakfast sandwich the other day that I hadn't eaten yet. He was extremely thankful. I guess I was just spooked a little this morning.. thats all.

I had a great time in SF - I love the city life!!!
I'm with Jume on this one... We can all afford our macbooks and the ability to travel to SF to attend an expensive conference. What's a couple more bucks? We are all fortunate to beable to do the things we do. I'm from Detroit and see this stuff all the time as well. However, virtually none of them are as talented as the ones I've seen in SF. C'mon -- the guy who was balancing upside down on his vodka bottle? The guy playing the drums on water jugs? Or the guy playing the clarinet? You don't get this stuff anywhere else. It's good for a couple bucks here and there...
You can come to 360|iDev in Denver a little closer, I presume, and we don't make everyone wait in line for every single session, and our food is better
WWDC for me was cool, but too big. 5200 people they said, some 1600 of which were iPhone devs.
