Custom app only for me without appstore

Is it possible to write a custom app for my own personal use which I only install on my device? I'll want to update the app every so often so I need something that will work ongoing. I don't want to pay the annual fee just for my own program. I also don't want to jailbreak my device.

Any ideas?

Apart from jailbreaking, $99 is the price of admission to get any custom app on your device.

Write the app (is XCode still free?), get a registered developer to do an ad-hoc distribution for you. Choose a dev you trust or you're going to end up "gifting" that code!

Xcode 3 is free, but Xcode 4 is $5 now, unless you buy the developer license, then it's free. I also don't know if the iOS 4.3 is free or if you will get an older version.
