Default camera auto-focus rectangle with cameraOverlayView

I want to have the camera auto-focus rectangle in my app to be able to focus manually somewhere by taping at it.
However when I set the camera overlay view to my own view the auto-focus rectangle disappears.
I know it is possible to have both a costomized overlay view and the auto-focus rectangle, since other apps like Camera Genius do it.
Anyone knows how they do this?

Default Camera overlay disables auto-focus

Did you ever figure that out? Perhaps one way other apps have worked around this is by NOT using the custom overlay feature at all, and instead just add a subview with their own frame (if that's the only thing they needed to tweak in the default camera behavior)?

I just found out the answer is pretty simple. Whether you see a square or not, when you touch the screen, it does work. Try it. You just need to draw your own square with animation.
