The magazine is already in stores in print and this is the next natural step.

if you just want a basic mag, then adobe is fine. but it has a limited feature set, you cant write anything custom for it, unless you want to do custom things in html5, but im not a fan of it. compared to writing in objective c, html5 is slow and unresponsive. someone may prove me wrong, but im yet to see any html5 perform as good as something written in objective c.
if you want something custom, there are half a few open source magazine frameworks. but it depends what you want. i have tried every one of them that i could find as of 6 months ago, but not one of them could do what i wanted.
i want something that doesnt show pages loading when you bring a new page in, even when swiping pages as fast as you can. this is where most of them immediately fail. they either bring in a blank page and then fade in the loaded page, or just hard show the page when loaded, or others work by the reader swiping, a delay while the page loads, then it animated the loaded page sliding in. when i drag my finger to change page, i never want to see a delay, i never want to see a page load, i just want it all to be seamless.
half of them are html5 viewers. and that again brings back the loading times. minimum of half a second load per page for a 20k page displaying a single image. its terrible. some of them generate hi res image preview, and when you change page it brings in the hi res image while the html5 is loading, and it does a nice job... for a few pages. but the first time you load any page in the mag you get the delay as there is no cached preview yet. and if theres too many pages it cant load all the previews and you are back at the loading times again..
theres a bunch of other reasons i could go into as well. but in the end after months of searching, thorough testing, i couldnt find a solution for what i am after. the only answer was to build it myself. 9 months later, 7 days a week working up to 18 hours some days, i am pretty much finished my evokke magazine platform.. the first part of it anyways. i have a whole list of features to add.
it has performance better than any other magazine i have seen, features no other magazine has such as 360 degree video player, multi angle video player, and a few others i cant publically mention yet. it also has rub and reveal to rub a layer and reveal anything underneath, image, video, animation, any combination fo the above, no black flashes when videos start playing or stops (some mag platforms shot a black flash intermittently when a video starts or stops), in a portrait only mag, the reader can still fullscreen a video then turn the device to landscape, exiting the video auto rotates the device to portrait to continue reading the mag, and highly customisable functions to control any features on the page via buttons, gestures, timers etc. theres all the usual stuff too like videos, audio, images, image galleries of various types, animations, web, etc etc that u find in any other mag platform. theres many many other features i havent listed but you get the idea..
what are you trying to do? if you are wanting something done contact me via pm and we can discuss it.
