So, recently my app was hovering around position 125 on Music Category in the US. For that position, I get around 30 sales. Couple of days ago it went up to around position 80 for the whole day, so I was naturally expecting better sales for that day, however, sales actually decreased that day to around 20. Weird, no?
Not really.
Ranks change all the time, sales volumes change all the time. You must have hit a spot where your sales dropped, but not as much as the overall sales of the category you're listed in.
Happens all the time. It's not uncommon for me to see the same sales and top grossing ranks in two categories go two different directions: RPG up and Strategy down.
Not to thread hijack but I have an education app in the same spot as yours, around 90-130. I had the good fortune of being put in the New & Noteworthy part of Education last week and this week again.
Besides continuing on developing my app to make it more featured / polished / bug free, etc, I'm not sure what to do to make it stay in the charts. Are you promoting your app in any way to get it to stay in the Music category top charts? Or are you relying on word of mouth, catchy name, good SEO in the app store searching to propel it? Or do people really look at the top 200 category charts that much and go from there?
I guess in general, I worry about lack of visibility for my app once it's off the N&N section.

Well, my app is a kind of 'niche' app, there arent too many of them around, so I think that helps keep an interest in it. Besides that, I try to improve it all the time, always make it easy to use, and absolutely stable as possible. I also provide good value for money, its a good functional app at a cheap price.. sure I dont make as much, but I prefer to feel that a customer will be happy with the little money they have spent, and hope that if a customer is happy, it will propagate good karma, and more people will be encouraged to buy it.
I dont promote the app in anyway, in fact, I'm kind of against advertising it.. I prefer it to get to where it is on its merit, in a natural way... if its ****, it does bad, if its good, then it will do good. Of course, there is always room for improvement. Improving the app is key to better sales.. with every update an improvement of the app, the sales have gone up a bit. So, I keep doing that, and hope it will continue to get better... At some point, once the app is exactly how I want it to be, I would consider getting some exposure via an ad or something, but for now, there is no cash for that...
