Hey there! I was wondering, if my app is in new and noteworthy, and an update goes through while it is in there, will my app automatically get taken off or will it remain up there? Also, if I just submitted an app and it is not in new and noteworthy yet, then submit an update, will that kill any chance of getting in there? Thanks!
Is it in the main 'N&N' on the device itself, or on the 'category' N&N? I think the main one is human controlled and actually worth getting excited about, in which case, it's tied to the app ID and should be fine (should!) - but the category N&N is bot-controlled (and not worth even blinking twice about), in which case I have no idea as it may pull it, but it may not, but it doesn't matter because that one has no effect on sales anyway.

Short of it - go for it IMO.
I've heard it bandied about that those N&N listings (as well as What's Hot) are bot-controlled but I think that's just a myth. As far as I know there is no evidence at all for such a claim.
The apps listed near the top of the What's Hot listings are almost all selling well and are mostly very well known - but certainly not because they are in that list.
One thing that does seem to be established beyond any serious doubt is that being in any such listing does not affect app sales.
I reckon category N&N were, at least (and probably still are), bot controlled. One week, there were 9 near-identical spam apps (IIRC they were books, before iBooks came out) all from the same developer, all crApps. 100% not hand-picked, unless the guy that picked them actually wrote them

There have been some crazy things appearing in featured categories - even in the front page N&N - the weirdest that I recall was during a two-week period when Apple was working on the storefront and all the category's What's Hot and N&N were just the alphabetically first apps in each category.
The fact that no media seemed to pick up on that suggests that those categories are not well-read - not that I have ever thought otherwise.
But such events are very rare and I've spent some time checking the quality of the apps near the top in various such categories and they are rarely spam apps or of terrible quality.
In fact, they are mostly well-known apps.
I have not much bothered looking at the bottom level apps.
But such spam apps do appear from time to time and I do think it may be attributable to human issues.
Weird things can have lots of explanations. Jumping to the conclusion that there is some Bot involved may seem satisfying, but there is still no evidence to support that. What's curious to me is that once someone suggests an explanation - such as The Bot - then it seems to fit the data and so everyone accepts it. But the real answer may be quite different.
