Dear all, How many of you are planning to pay attention to China market? More and more market reports showed the China app market has become the second largest market in the world. At the end of 2011, the Chinese local currency is accepted by Chinese Apple App Store. This also will boost download volumes in China. So how many of you will put more efforts on China market?
I think the two biggest hurdles are language and piracy
Localization is not a big problem. But Piracy problem is everywhere. But the trend is turn to Free app + IAP. In past years, Chinese people spent millions of money on Internet game, such as Warcraft and other Chinese Internet games. They will also pay for mobile app soon.
China can be big when it comes to downloads, but for sales it's lousy - it's nowhere near the top when it comes to customer spending.
Two markets I went for after U.S. are the german-speaking (Germany, Austria) - they have a plenty of iPhone users, and they are wealthy, and spanish-speaking (Spain, Mexico and so on). But nothing is even close to U.S., at least form my observation.

I'd say - Asia & Europe are comparable when it comes to sales. It's easier to do for Europe (less cultural differences), but on the other hand, the Chinese market may be less populated & people in China are less used to English, than in Europe.
The question to @betterlee - what do you think about chinese apps? How many chinese-language apps are there?

I'm planning to localize my app for the Chinese market, just to try and learn. I know there are some problems with piracy and such but they are with so many, even if the buy 4 times less then US people, they still are a market to go for I think. If they can buy iPhones they will also buy apps. With the new iPhone 4S being launched there and the acceptance of the local currency I think it is a market that is about to explode.
@merlin. According to a report from a China local research agency. There are only 14.6% apps support Chinese in Chinese apple app store until Nov of 2011. So I believe localization is very important for China market.
Only a handful Chinese people speak/read English, so yes, localization is very important there.
As for sales, selling an app targeted for western markets is not easy in China and you'll get only few sales. If you design the app with cultural aspects from the beginning - you may see some decent sales.
