I have an App that was not doing 'great' but selling around 70 a day.
I upgraded it, to include more and was happy that this might help it rise above its position (always hovering between 50th-80th position in that particular section)....but it went down, down , down to 600+th position and stayed there for 2 days.
What have I done? Why did I do it?
I may as well send it off to my free section now.

Did you set the deployment target to iOS 5.0 in the update? This happened to me once.
Or perhaps the app crashes and you did get alot of bad reviews?
Did you change the category?
An update is always dangerous for ranking.
I did not change the app name, but did change the Icon.
The key words are the same.
The reviews are the same.
I had no sales yesterday for the app.
I am confused. Will see if it moves today.

It says compatible with 3.1 or later in the app store.
no crashes, no bad reviews, no change in category.
But as I said, it is not a 'top' app, but had consistent sales.
Just had a look at my 'featured history' in Applyzer, and was only featured in 3 countries prior to the update, and now for last 3 days I am featured in 20 countries. What does this mean? Featured?
Panic is slightly over. It has crept back up and is now nearly in the top 200.
If I can get it back into the top 100 then it will look better.
I updated in the hopes of getting top 5 ...
Is the ranking for a different area? Example, US vs China...
You mentioned you were featured in 3 now 20, that could be the key. You need to look at the sales over a longer period.

Interesting post, this is exactly what has happened to one of my apps jus 2 days ago after an update, it was doing ok prior to the update, now fallen out of existence.
The most annoying thing is that it's been / was stuck in review since dec 5th
There is always an implicit risk in updating an app. I once did it from iOS 2.x to 3.0, thinking I would please my users with all the new features of 3.0. Screwed it completely, for no reason at all, and to this date I rue the decision, and why now I only ever do updates if I'm a) drunk or b) desperate or c) BOTH...
Seriously though, Apple can play around with something their end just before you do an update and all your hard work is suddenly undone through no fault of your own, which is why, IMHO, if you've got something reasonably successful that doesn't need an update (if it ain't broke, don't fix it!), leave it be...

Is that decision still cost you until now? or it recover somewhat.

No, this was wrong.... I am dropping drastically. Nearly in the 700's, so no point in looking anymore.

can't agree more on that, if an app works and drives sales, leave it be!
One app was doing well and after updated it, its position went down!
the downloads was consistent before the update is approved.
just after the update, the downloads drop to half!
