My theory: i think the ranking now is based on ratings of current version only?
so after an update, the ratings are 0 basically. so it drops. make sense?
damn it apple..................................... fix ittt

I think you are right. Saying that, this is the first time it has happened after an update, and am just keeping my fingers crossed that the key words help to direct some buyers.
Overnight I jumped 300 places. Things are looking up, but still need to jump another 350 places to be anywhere close to where I was!!
That sucks. My app is similar. Slowly climbing back the rank, but seems like it wont get back to the previous position prior to the update.
Thanks Apple, for nothing. Go on then, play with the ranking more... I like my apps to be the last of the ranking. Yea I do. I work hard to make the app super cool so that I could be at the bottom of the rank. Thanks.
Apples system might be simular to Google. I understand that with Google, it takes several months for a site to move up in the ranks. This might be to keep brand new apps / sites from shooting up to the top.
The thing about this is that we all know some apps start from day one with very high ranks, others don't.
I wonder what would have happened if you killed the old app and put out a brand new one instead of an update.
I'd be interested in see this app, can you post a link?

Ranks are extremely fluid. I've gone from #50 to #1 within days.

EXACTLY what I was referring to in my earlier post. You make a nice update to make the users happy, when the bottom line is you'd have been better off not spending any time on it and 'sitting pretty'. Sometimes Apples development on ranking algos and the like just aren't thought through fully - and it's the 'little guys' that suffer.
I'm really glad I put 'hold for developer release' on a new update - I may not bother releasing after having heard this.
Whilst I look at overall ranking , my key metric is ranking in within the results of search terms I know people will use when looking for apps like mine.
I aim for higher in those and tend to find one fixes the other.
i just updated one of my apps mid last week and seems like the rankings stayed around the same, no sharp drops for me. However prior to that the rankings were terrible so i updated with new icon and screenshots and it shot right up the rankings to goto overall number 1 in thailand and a few other countries.. sadly not us..

I'm fairly certain there is no bug, and that ratings still are how they always have been with updates having any effect.
As Bignoggins said, rankings are pretty fluid, and when someone happens to see their apps ranking drop right after an update it would be very easy for them to incorrectly think that the update was responsible for the change in rank.
Just briefly looking at the appstore though you can see that many apps that were updated very recently still hold their top positions, and by looking at apps through App Annie or other ranking trackers you can see that there doesn't appear a giant negative correlation with releasing updates.

Charlie you may be correct, I have updated other apps and this has not happened, but clearly the drop in this case was too extreme, the app has had good sales since August 2011. It has finally got into the top 200 again, and if it carries on rising then I will know it was all about the update.
Well u said u changed ur icon. I had the reversed effect after updating and changing my icon. Maybe u shud revert the icon... Or even better show us the differences between the two.
We shall soon see - I've got an update (minor app, no 'hold for dev release') going through at the moment - will let you know over the course of the next few days what happens...
