Default Free Mac Apps

I am wondering how those free mac apps earn money? Or they just don't? Merely for publicity purposes?

Well, Freeware is not a new concept Quite a few passionate programmers roaming out there.

Aside from them, you've got some apps which are a cheaper version of the paid ones, and some apps which just serve to promote other producer's products.

Finally, unfortunately, there might be some scammers in the app store. Unlike in iOS, in Mac up until recently you didn't have sandboxing, that means that a malicious app could've stolen your data, passwords, etc...

I know that. I dished out a few Windows freewares as well in the past. But I didn't spend a buck, except for some time and electric bills.

But for distribution on Mac, you need to pay 99bucks. So I am wondering
whether there are ways to monetize through free Mac apps like, ads or something else.

Sparrow's Lite version has adds.
But apart from that one, i haven't seen ads in free Mac Apps.
