Hit $200 last weekend but its not baseball season yet so I think I should be fine. I just submitted my basketball stats tracker so that should help seeing it is basketball season. Hopefully after next month I can say I am over $1000
Another statistic I'd like to see in one of these polls is not just how much an individual developer made, but with how many apps in the market and what percentage of each app made up their income.
With so many people posting < $1000, I suspect they have maybe 1 or 2 half baked apps in the store, vs. those that have built up a quality portfolio.
I think just like any other investment, you have to diversify your portfolio of apps, and not rely on just one or two for the majority of your income.

I make all my income off of 2 apps. About 75% are from my first app, and 25% are from my second app that I released in September of last year.
Diversification is a viable strategy if you are trying to just make a bit of side income. But if you want to make a significant income I think you need to try and generate some homeruns, and not just bat singles. My guess is any respondents in the top 3 ranges have had a top 100 grossing app at some point, which I would say is a bonafide hit in the app store. Hard to get there if you try to diversify.

See, i'm not too sure about that. Obviously App Store hits will get you into that upper range of self employed developer, but I think it might be the exception rather than the rule. That's why I'd like to see more users respond about it.

Our strategy is to release a portfolio of attempted homeruns, which seems to be working so far, though I recognise we have the resources and finance far beyond most posters here.
My suggested strategy is for people to build up and grow a small portfolio of high quality, complementary apps which will build a strong brand and allow for good cross sell opportunities. A lone developer or small team should be able to release and service up to 3 or 4 high quality apps a year.

This is pretty much my strategy as well. But I think th key is that you have to aim for home runs and not just try and go for volume
Did <$100 on my first month after just trying out allready proven popular app's..
Not the best idea, but i can take that, i didn't know better
But now i will go with niched app's, and i can just agree with my gfx designer, i quote:

God this'll be so fking awesome whoever won't buy it will be a SUCKER
The only way to go is up from here, and i hope for a successful 2k12 for everyone
First app released in December, made about 20$ but it was only a small "test" app. Hope to make between 5k and 10k in 2012 with new apps I'll be launching (this is just side income for me, so also don't have THAT much time to work on my own apps).
You thought 40k/year is on "the lower end" of app developers?
Dunno if its sarcasm if it is low or not but I only been developing since April or something last year and programming was brand new thing to me back then. I learnt alot, but i know theres still alot to learn (I've still havent worked out what memory management is or what synthesizing, delegate, nonatomic, retains means but i stuck to the basics and used tactics i learned in my years at uni.. seems to work well i guess. lets hope a half coder can get 100k this year
