That's the key point, I had the same experience.
In the space of 2 days:
China: Free: 20000 downloads top 2 overall, Paid: 1 download.
US: Free: 700 downloads, top nothing overall, Paid: 20 download.
This is why everyone that says China is a big market hasn't got an app out there. It simply is not _now_. It could be one day? Maybe.
