Default What could have caused a BIG spike in downloads

for just one day?

I am baffled as to how one of my app (free) suddenly got a huggeeee.. (for me at least) spike just on 1 day, specifically 3rd Jan. It went from few hundreds downloads per day to about 38,000++ downloads per day on that day. Then on the next, it comes back down to its normal number.

The app I'm talking about is this: App Store - Label Dispenser Lite

I don't see it being featured anywhere... as I check in appannie.com. it got a couples of reviews when it was launched in June last year but that's all.

It's really a mystery to me. Anybody had a similar case before?

Looks like some kind of a fluke.
Usually when you get such a big bump it lasts for days, it doesn't go back to the previous numbers on the next day, due to an increased rank, which brings you more organic downloads. At least that's my experience with Dragon Lords and few times it has been featured.

That was my initial guess as well. I had a few featured apps in the past, but the downloads goes down gradually, instead of sudden drop like what's happening with Label Dispenser Lite. It was a free app, so there was just a bump in the ads revenue only, not much. If only it was a paid app, i'd be like bignoggin for a day!

You probably got mentioned on twitter or on a blog or such.
Nothing special, just a daily news which is old the next day.

Look for mentionings of your app on Google, maybe you will find something.

I had a case like that, it was a japanese company who made a promotion they bought bulk copies (for a paid app) (30k) and gave away for free.

Now I cannot see it working on a free app but I think it might have been something like that. If it goes from 38k to normal then it's not a normal spike, as anything like that would at least have a bit of a trail off.

If all the downloads were from the same country I think that's a bulk buy.

Check out your reviews, and see what country had the spike in reviews.

That would be my guess.

I recommend setting up Google Alerts for each of your apps so people can be alerted to media coverage at the earliest opportunity.

Interesting. But for a free app, it doesn't make sense.
As I checked further the downloads are mainly from the UK and EUROPE (italy, denmark, etc). But app is not featured there. I mean any sort of coverage (reviews or others) would have appeared on google right? I googled it many times and have not found anything dated 3rd Jan. Unless they are typing it in foreign language but I doubt it since GBP is one of those high downloads. Even so, the next day download should trail off slowly, and not immediately goes back to normal. My graph for that app goes like this

........|.......

Im down to 2 guesses now:
-perhaps mentioned in the television?
-Europe appstore ranking messed up.

Maybe there is nothing behind it. The odds of this happening due to chance are very very low, but they are bigger than zero. Since there are so many apps on the App Store, the chance that it will happen to someone sooner or later is very high

I don't know if that's the case here, but it may be.

I am not complaining, just that I'd like to know who mentioned my app? Because I'd like to say thanks, and perhaps offer some promocodes to them for the pro version and so on.

What i know is,
-Not apple (not featured)
-Not blog/website reviews (google yields no result for it)

I wish the person just send me a twit or an email. oh well. here's a thank.
Thank you!. (contact me if u want promocodes for pro version).
