New releases in categories are arranged alphabetically by day now????
they used to be arranged by date released (furthered ordered by time released) but now I've noticed a trend of people just putting "AAA" in front of their app title so they appear at the top of the newly released lists... AND IT'S WORKING??!!
So when I update my app called "Seconds to New Year" I'm already 3/4 pages away, even if I was the absolute latest addition to that category.

It is of course something that can be used for an advantage. It depends only on the moral of the developer.
From the point of view of a user and by common standards it is absolutelly convenient to have the apps sorted alphabetically.
However if I, as a user, see an app with an AAA title, where it is absolutelly inappropriate and it is not for checking the charge level of an "AAA battery", I immediatelly know, that it is probably a crap and don't even look at it.
I dare to say, that Angry Birds has its title exactly because of this. They probably tried "Mad Birds" and "Pissed Birds" before...
Otherwise I wouldn't think too much about it.
Most of the top 10 titles don't start with an A.
I suppose it annoyed me that i could spend months developing an app, but still get put 42 places behind someone who just types "A" in front of the name

Ridiculous!
Wow, you just notified this? Not a very detailed person I see.

Guys, Numbers come before letters, so your app must start with 000
Even better: with a sign, like a star or an emoticon. They come before numbers
Pluses, stars, minuses, numbers, etc. do not change the alphabetical order in the new/update release. It defaults to the first letter in your app name. For example, 1+*Flashlight is still squished in between all the other apps that start with F.

Yes, but for example in Entertainment the first app is the one with the title "?" after that comes the app with the title "42" and then the one with the title "" then come all the AAA and AA+ titles.
So you are right, if you have a letter in your title, that will determine your position, but if you have only a sign as a title, then you are the "sheen" ("Winning!")
