Default Need your opinion

Hey there, me and a friend have recently been thinking and we came up with an idea and just want to get some opinions on it. Just so you know before reading this, I graduate next year with a Marketing Degree and I'm looking to get into the marketing field.

So, we understand that there are A LOT of "iPhone app marketing services" out there in which you pay a firm to market your app for you. The average cost of the basic packages at these companies can range from $300-$600 dollars!! That is a lot just for the basic package if you ask me. We also understand most people hate these things because of all the free marketing you can do yourself. There is a major discrepancy there.

Our idea was to provide a marketing service like this with a couple major differences. Firstly, it would only be me and one partner, therefore there is essentially no labor we need to pay, resulting in a MUCH lower cost for our packages. Rather than taking all of the paid routes for advertising, reviewing, and press releases, we would take the free ones only paying for the ones we think are valuable. This also leads to a much lower cost for you! We did the math and figured we could provide a basic package for about $100. This would involve reviews from some review sites that we would gain a relationship with, a press release written by my friend (a very good writer), effective keyword implementation, a tweet and facebook status from what would be our company account, and then of course some advertising on websites and maybe a paid review (haven't done the specifics yet). This is around 4x less cost than the average company and has nearly just as many aspects.

We look at it as more of a personal relationship in which you just worry about the development of the app and we will do all the dirty work for you for a tiny fee. We would also offer a free package in which we tweet your app, which of course would suck until we get some followers haha.

Anyways I was just wondering what everyones thoughts on this are.

I honestly think the concept of "app marketing" is oxymoronic.

Hmmm I think your "advantages" would turn into disadvantages quite quickly.

Only two of you for $100 would mean that soon you'll be understaffed and you won't be able to promote my app as well as you would have done if you had more time on your hand.

I would gladly pay someone good money if I know they do a kick-*** job.

It's like I have to re-do the tiling in my bathroom, I prefer to spend a bit more and have a work well done rather than a scrappy one and save few bucks.

It looks to me you're improvising this thing and it's not something you would want to do from the ground up, you need to gain some experience first.

I don't think the price is the main issue. I think it's far and above the effectiveness of the job done. I think anyone here would pay $2000 for something that added sales of $4000 in two months!

If I were doing what your talking about, I'd find a way to become more effective than the other guys. Try to figure out where people go to get info on apps (review sites, facebook, tweets...)

Once you have a tactic that you think is well researched, put it into action by offering free promotions for 10 apps in trade for those people writing a response here.

Maybe have 1/2 the app be stale apps, apps that have been on the market and haven't gone anywhere but are reasonable apps. This would offer some proof of concept.

I really don't think the issue is cost, it's much more an issue of effectiveness.

Once you have that covered, the next issue is to build a trust with developers so that you become the 'go to' guy.

I dont think 100$ or 400 -> 600$ is the problem here !
The problem is how the effective of your marketing service.

btw: I'll try your service if it available ^^

1. The service you are offering isn't going to move needle on sales and the developer will likely make a loss on the exercise
2. If you do your job properly and are only charging $100 then you'll be losing money too

WOW. 60K downloads a day that's a LOT even for a free app. Congrats.
