Hello.
I am an artist and work with a developer who has turned many of my artworks into several wallpaper apps. I currently have 11 apps, some selling better than others. A year ago, I got all of these apps approved and into the store with no problems. The functionality is simple: slideshow, save image to library & view all images as thumbnails. - no need to be complicated for a wallpaper app. Also I dont want there to be sharing or editing of these images, because I want to protect my copyright on these images as much as possible (yes I realize they will get sent around anyway, but I dont want to ENCOURAGE IT).
So heres the problem:
I recently updated several of these apps to fix some bugs so they run better on the iphone 4, and also updated image resolution, etc. All of these updates got rejected by the app store, citing that they werent using the capabilities of the iphone ,and they didnt want 100s of similar apps cluttering up the app store. They also cited in particular that the images were "poor quality". Mind you these images are also used for products sold at Target & nationwide, and are made with care, so this to me was more of a taste issue, as the images were all high resolution.
When I appealed this, I spoke with someone on the appeal board, who seemed to not really be that familiar with my apps, saying that he saw nothing in his notes about the image quality being an issue, but rather that since I had already had 10 wallpaper apps, they didnt want a ton of similar apps in the store, and that I needed to utilize the ios sdk capabilities, or make it in HTML 5 & sell on my own (no thanks). the reason i say that he seemed unfamiliar with the apps is that he suggested adding functionalities that I already had in the app. When pressed further, he suggested that I create one big app with an in app purchase for each package of wallpapers, rather than several separate apps. I dont really want to do this for the existing apps because I will lose my comments, etc & put some effort into the naming conventions of the apps.
After reading through some of the treads about approvals, I realize that this may be common for the app store to reject apps that may have been approved in the past, possibly due to the mood / taste of the approver. <?>
I am though considering creating a new big app for at least some of the new wallpaper packages not currently in the app store, but not really that excited about the gamble of putting a lot of money and time into the CHANCE they might get approved, when the response could easily be ,'No you have to have even more functionality, an app with in app purchases is not enough'.
I realize that most of the developers on this board are doing much more complex things than wallpaper apps, but I am wondering if anyone has any advice/ experience in this area.
Now the cases are closed on the updated/ rejected apps, but I am wondering if I resubmit updates if maybe they will get through this time?
I think you already gave the answer to your own question, there is no way your wallpaper 'app' is going to get in the app store because it lacks functionality. And like promo said trying to push it further by keeping re-submitting is just asking for a ban.
No offense but what you've made there can be hardly called an app, this is something every 12-year old could make during his lunch break.
Also be careful. If you try to submit again, they could end up pulling all your previous apps.
Just make a big one and call it "2" or something. (appzilla2) :P Have themed IAPs per wall paper set and have a buy-all feature. You prob will get a million dollars.
