Congrats! How has your experience been on the amazon app store?

Amazon's App Store numbers are worth while?
We had a very good experience with the Amazon guys, I was already a long time amazon aws (cloud computing) customer and a bit of an Amazon fan, so I'm a bit biased. They have contacted us personally about Paper Camera so we had a very good communication with them.

The market is probably picking up now, dont expect numbers that you see on iOS or the Android Market but if Amazon will push it as they should then it could be great, one of the feature I really like is the ability to reply to the user review, which is quite helpful as the Amazon market seems to be really review-driven, or at least much more than on the iPhone.

The charts also are more organic, the top charts don't drive the market, but they are being driven by all the various offers like savings, app of the day, featured, similar apps, spotlights, and the various "customer also bought" links and so on... So it looks like it's a bit easier to get discovered, you don't have to beg on the featured spot for your only chance to get visibility like it happens on iOS.

Sure, the numbers are small atm, but as I said, it's an emerging market, and I hope it will get at least 100x bigger, I'm quite sure Amazon has got the potential to make it.

Another thing I've noticed is that the Android market is not 0.99 driven, which is really good news for us, I've seen apps at $4.99 all over the top 10, sure, there will always be the 0.99 angry birds and friends but it looks like users are more prepared to not have an heart attack if they see a price above 0.99. (In fact if you are a regular amazon buyer most of those app prices will look pretty low, so that's very very good news for us)

For us european there is a strange 30% tax, on top of the 30% amazon cut, but you can waive that if you fill a wb8 form or something like that

We will see.

I am looking for a big US publisher for Android. Amazon's store only allows US developers and the normal Android marketplace only allows a handful of countries to sell paid apps.

Paper Camera #1 overall on the Amazon AppStore

I'm not sure what the Amazon contract and NDA is so I'm afraid I cannot share the numbers with you as usual, but hey, great stuff
Congrats!!

I think Amazon sells apps only in US but international developers are allowed to submit their apps in the store to sell in US.

Wow, this last weekend, if you add the Amazon & Android markets together, I sold more android apps than iOS apps for the first time ever! (In fact, a month ago, it was study at 40-1.) Since then, my Android sales are increasing while my Apple sales have basically sucked.

25 Android market to every 1 Amazon . . . . But a little misleading since I just started posting in the Amazon store about a month ago. Amazon was like "nothing" for the first couple of weeks but seems to be picking up. I hope when they finally release their tablet all will be good.

This has been close to my experience as well - we're about 10:1 Android Market to Amazon and we've been out for a few months now.

Since I'm new here (our first game was released on Android and we're porting to iOS now) it is *really* interesting to hear sales comps on the two platforms. Overall we haven't seen the paid app market develop on Android thusfar. If you sell over 100 games, you have outsold 80% of other games on the market; sell 500 and you've outsold over 90% of other games.

I've heard other categories have better sales (Fantasy Football Monster is a great example!) but for games it seems iOS versions outsell Android counterparts by 10x at least.

I could go on at length about developing for Android, particularly dealing with the fragmentation issue, but I'll spare you guys

I believe one reason to why games sell so much better on iOS is pure and simple: The iPod Touch.

Hey bignoggins...

Saw you had a huge day yesterday on the app store, mind sharing the ratio or how your android side of sales did?

Thanks in advance

I actually think there is a demographic element - iPhone was first to market and the people who buy them are typically pretty savvy and use tech a lot. Android became the lower end smartphone, so while they are experiencing a huge number of device activations the customer base is made up of people who were late adopters of smartphones. So they may download a lot of apps (I think Android hit 1B app downloads near the same time - relative to release of the platform - as iOS did) but they aren't willing to pay for them.

Add in the friction of the marketplace experience and it in part explains why paid apps and in-app transactions do so much better on iOS.

android has been terrible lately. Made a hair over $200, compared to 4.4K for the same app on iPhone. So 20:1.

This is pretty much what I was expecting, to be honest I was very surprised the Android version was making more revenue at one point

Android has this thing called "Top New Paid" which is almost like a feature. I was in Top New Paid for a while and had strong sales, but once I dropped off they tanked.

I don't regret doing Android though because there are network effects even across the OSes if you are in the same niche.

We actually started getting some sales on Android (though nothing great) when we removed our free version from the store. Seemed that the free version was cannibalizing sales, and there were hardly any In-App Purchases from the free version. I think sometimes having a free version kills sales rather than helping them. Maybe there are just more really good free options now than there used to be so rather than moving on to the paid version, most people just move on to the next free app.
