have app that was .99 was not selling well. So tried making it free, within 1 day moved in the free top 25 in its category. Whats the strategy at this point to get it making money, there are no ads and no functions to make any kind of inapp or lite version.
switch it back to paid asap!! I did the same and free downloads increased,so when i switched back to paid after 4 months, nobody buys it again!! Before i changed to paid sells have been better, you should switch it for free just for one or two days just to fire it up and then switch it back !!
2. This particular app was not right to use advertising on.
If you don't mind me asking, what app is this?
I don't mean to be the capitalist douchebag in the house, but I'm pretty sure you can stick ads pretty much anywhere for monetization purposes. If you want to keep it free and don't want to use ads, the only other way to really monetize is via in-app purchases. If you're interested in that, you can contact me via skype: awestonlin, but I don't see any other way you're really going to be able to monetize while using the traction from your switch from paid --> free.

I just added an in app purchase to a free app that has 350,000 users and I am making more money off that than the money I was making when it was a paid app.

I agreed with what twerner says. I did see some improvements for the apps went free for one or to days and getting back to paid. Best thing to go ahead with this offer is writing a PR and distributing it to newswires. There are sites like FreeappADay, contacting them to promote this offer would be great!
so should I leave it free and add an inapp?? it now moved in top 10 of its category.
Well, I mean ultimately that's up to you. If you're gaining alot of traction and you really are top 10 in your category, then you're really free to monetize however you like.
a word of caution:
If your game is social, in-app purchases are the way to go. Think about it this way. If your game works in the way farmville works: buy virtual goods to progress faster in the game, then integrating in-app purchases is a fantastic option. It means that your best customers will come back day after day buying and you'll be able to monetize faster.
If your game is just a regular app, go with a cpm network like AdMob or iAd. It really depends on what your in-app function does, but if it means alot of your customers will really benefit from it, you can have a healthy mixture of both.
if you need help integrating virtual currency, you can add me on skype: (awestonlin) and we can discuss it further.
Happy developing!

If you do intend to add ads to your app, consider Nexage as a monetization partner. A quick list of benefits:
1. A single integration point to access 60+ ad sources including iAd, AdMob, Millennial Media, and DataXu
2. Consolidated reporting dashboard
3. For developers, a comprehensive SDK suite to deploy across multiple platforms
4. Easy, reliable payment and reconciliation
so i put it back to paid and sales dropped to nothing
Personally, I'd rather have a free app in the Top 10 than a paid app making nothing. At that point it's a matter of pride and knowing people are using the app I created.
Aside from that, I think the best strategy is a free app with In App Purchase. Not Ads. If there's something you can add to the app that brings additional value that you can charge for that would be ideal. If not, keep it free and work on your next app with the knowledge you have of this one.
