My application, Ringtonify, was submitted on iTunes Connect on October 25th. Its status changed to "In Review" on November 2nd.
On November 4th, I received this e-mail from App Review:
"We are currently reviewing an app that you submitted for inclusion on the App Store, and want to let you know that the review process will require additional time."
On November 12th, two and a half weeks after submitting the app, I sent them this e-mail:
"Hi, I was wondering the status of my review and if there is anything I can do to help."
They responded quickly:
"At this time your app is pending completion of review. We process apps in the order in which they are submitted and are working hard to process all submissions in a timely manner. Once the review process has been completed for your app, you will receive an email notification of its updated status."
Since November 12th, I haven't heard anything. The analytics I use for my app show that they used my app on November 3rd, but haven't since.
It has now been over 4 weeks, and it's getting quite frustrating. Has anyone else experienced review times that have lasted this long?
About my app:
My app, Ringtonify, is a ringtone creation app. There are two versions, free with ads and paid without.
You can record a ringtone (using your phone's mic) or you can select a song from your library and chose the part of the song you would like to make a ringtone from (much like the other popular ringtone apps).
In the future, I plan on implementing the ability to add effects to your ringtones. I did everything myself, including the graphic design and coding.
Until Apple loosens the restrictions surrounding custom ringtones, the app requires you to sync with a computer to install the ringtone on your phone.
Maybe it went to some reviewer who does lousy job, who knows. You can reject your binary and then reupload it again. This way your app will end up back into review queue and hopefully will end up with another reviewer.
I did it once. My up went into "In review" the very next day and then was stuck there for couple of weeks. I thought something went wrong with the review process (the reviewer forgot or something), I rejected the binary (along the way I had some minor bug fixes) and resubmitted the app again. Everything went smoothly. I think it just ended up with another reviewer who did his job better.
Of course there is some risk involved - you may end up in the same situation but + 1 month wasted time.

I'm not really interested in rejecting my app. The two biggest App Store download days of the year are Christmas and Black Friday. My chances of getting in on either of those days is very slim if I reject considering the shutdown of ITC for Christmas.
I don't think, making ringtones on your own is something apple likes.
There was something with ringtones being removed from itunes or they want to sell ringtones or something like that.
If your app is in review so long, they have something, they don't like and don't know, how to proceed.
It will be rejected sooner or later for sure.
My app was released and then I was called, that it will be removed because it was released by mistake in the first place.
I couldn't reason with them. They couldn't tell me why it will be rejected. The best unswer was "just because".
The app was removed after 3 weeks being on the appstore, having almost only 5 star reviews.
I submit an update every time it gets rejected. Some time in the future maybe they will get bored and release it.

btw did you hear about that guy, who was rejected with his political comic strips because of "ridiculing famous people"? A few days later the guy received the Pulitzer Prize.
Steve Jobs then said, they would publish it now, but "the guy didn't resubmit it again".
So much about Apple and its rules. Bunch of idiots.

Well, my concerning apps are no ringtone apps, but emergency dialers on the market for more than half a year and the updates are still in review after 14 days review, at the 2nd day i received the mail...additional time is needed...
after writing 4 mail to ITC i got an automated email back ...your apps are pending compliance... (10.day) and i have to admit that the update is a simply minor update..... So what shall i do, reject all updated and re-upload hoping that they are ready for sale in 2011 ???
Yesterday i have written the 6. email to itc no response yet !
If it is one of those, touch to dial apps, I know someone who got theirs rejected

and why was it rejected? do you know it does not violate any developer rules or? i mean mine are on the market for a long time, there is no reason to reject them!
Apple can reject apps if they think there are already too many.
Quote:
2.11 Apps that duplicate apps already in the App Store may be rejected, particularly if there are many of them

Apple can reject any app for any or no reason at all. They can remove any app at any time and can close anybody's account at any time with or without any reason. It's in the agreement. All these "sections" are more like guidelines, meaning "if you do that we will definitely reject your app, so don't waste your and our time". But that doesn't mean if you comply with every section of their guidelines they can't reject your app.

I'm scared now... Today is my 10th day of "waiting for review" and nothing happens.... Anyone has the same problem? Do you think is the case of reject the binary and repost again?

For what it's worth, I don't believe re-uploading will help your chances. I went through almost exactly the same thing with my initial App upload. I waited about 7 days, then found a critical bug and had to reject and re-upload, and I still had to wait for about 7 or 8 days before it was actually reviewed.
Have you tried emailing them and requesting an expedited review?

By the 11st day they changed to In Review... Hope is not a 11 days review...
BTW, how do I request an expedited review?

Hi
Mine was approved after 6 weeks in review, without any reason told to me - after 8 email to the review team, which they actually never replied !
This contact problem only happened in this app case, normally the contact to the review team was good ! I never found out why it was such a long time in review !!

Hi, the same situation as mine, my ringtones maker app in review 5 days now, I got the same letter as yours , any luck for you now? probably they don't like ringtones maker apps...
Nice! Looks like the ringtone designer just a little less polished
Thanks. My goal was to take the best of the two main ringtone apps out there and make them better. My first step was to give users the ability to record ringtones with their microphone. PM me or reply here if you have any feedback for me.
Since I'm a one man dev team, my graphic skills currently aren't on par with a full time graphic designer, but I'll get there hopefully.
