I only set the release date to be a future date instead of "release when approved" one time, as I was hoping to coordinate a review with the release of my app.
However, on the day of the release date that I chose, my app was approved but was not listed at the top of the New Releases because the date it had associated with it was the day that Apple APPROVED it (6 days earlier).
This was a few months back, has anybody tried this recently with different results?

It has changed since then. When a dev sets the release date, that set release date will be the one displayed in the app store
Does that mean if my app gets approved on 15 Nov but I set my release to be 01 Dec, my app will still appear at the first page of new release on 01 Dec?

no, it won't appear on the first page of new releases.

This is the way it SHOULD work... but it did not work for me four months ago. My app appeared on the second page of new releases with the date that it was approved instead of the day I set for release.

I've recently done this. When submitting I set the release date to November 30th. App got approved October 19th and I adjusted the release date to October 22nd. App showed up fine in new releases on October 22nd.

Mine didn't work few months ago either. Maybe they fixed it now.
