I submited an app on the 7th of JUNE, still hasn't been approved.. so going on 7 or 8 weeks now. I received a "your app is taking unexpected additional time for review" email about a week after I submitted.. is there any way to contact apple and see what is going on? should I resubmit the app to try for a new reviewer?
I don't know if this is your problem but I read on the iTunes Connect website that sometimes a delay is caused by a question of whether you have the rights to something used in your app. Such as an image, sound, or music. They are suppose to contact you so you can provide the supporting documentation but who knows if they actually do.
It's had to say if a resubmission will do any good. It would be terrible if you were just a few hours away from approval and you rejected the binary.

Apple's tight squeeze on the sac gets tighter. Did you know you can get reject on an update for an original item in your app? How about getting rejected for an unused photo in your resources folder, I know I am not the only one who does this. That is NOT even used in the app at all?!

Reason: poor spelling
Update: had received the "your application is taking unexpected additional time for review" email about a week after I submitted the update. was worried it would be at least a month before approval. got approved today and the total time waiting is 16 days. not bad at all. barring problems showing up in the release date list, which usually happens, i'll be very pleased with the experience

Hmm I hope my situation is similar to yours. Submitted the 20th, got the additional time email on the 26th... Still waiting. I was worried about the email.
We submitted iPuck v1.2 on July 27. We received the approval email this morning, August 6. I can't believe that it took 10 days to approve a relatively minor update. This is the longest we've waited for an update to be approved.
At last !! Update accepted after a little more than 10 days !
The last update had been rejected for a minor problem (no connection unavailable warning) so it took us almost 3 weeks days before having our update post. So frustrating !

That's the Apple way my friend
But it's okay, at least it's now approved. Congratulations!

well %@#%$@
it quickly showed up in the release date list but by the end of the day it completely disappeared from the release date list. i dont mean it was pushed back a page or two, i mean it completely vanished. i also noticed some apps are listed twice. i got totally screwed again and my sales reflect it. i basically wasted weeks on this update for nothing. my sales are the same as they are every day. #%@%@
If they reject your app for something minor, and you correct it, do they rereview it any faster than the initial review? Or is it still around 10 days?

The process starts anew, so another 10 days.
HOWEVER, there is something we have to applaud Apple for. We released a first version of an app that had a big bug. Upon request from us (via email), they pushed through the update in 3 days. Thank you Apple!
I'm hitting my head against the wall, I submitted my first app on July 7th and it still is in review! I tried to send an email to apple last week but just got an auto response. Then earlier tis week I received an email saying that there has been a delay! what should I do?
On Apples developer tips page it says that the average wait time is 14 days (2 weeks). My first app that was rejected took 4 days to get rejected but my second app that was accepted took 12 days.
Maybe it's just me but i wish there was a more clear status method saying "not yet reviewed", "in review", "In second step", or "In final step". That would be awesome!!!!!
So when they eventually update the store each day do they do it all at once or do they post new apps up on the store as they are approved? So days it seems like apps are added throughout the day but then other days (like today for example) it seems like all the new apps are going to be posted all at once as none have actually hit the store with a release date of 8/10 yet.

I think that has something to do with them not adding much on Sunday? I noticed a large amount of new ones will show up at once sometime Monday afternoons.
Submitted my first app on July 29th and am anxiously waiting. I know they launched my app on Aug 6th. Is there a "normal" timeline on how long after they've actually reviewed an app to a decision?
You are a Billion Dollar company but you make a mom and pop software company look good.
They got back to me after 30 days in review only to tell me that my rating was off. They wanted 17+...so, changed it and resubmitted. Christ, I am not a mind reader. If you know how you want to rate our apps, then please why don't YOU rate them, and leave us out of your pissant guessing games. Easy to do. And if we don't like YOUR ratings, we can always delete the app and start over.
We also sent them an email on an unrelated problem 2 months ago...yeah that was 2 months ago, and they FINALLY gave us an answer. Well, we already solved it no thanks to you, Apple. But it was nice of you to send us a reply 2 months later...NOT!
Finally, binary uploads take forever. And these are small binaries. iTunes totally sucks....so we use Application Loader. That also takes forever, and when it finally uploads...iTunes still shows it as "upload binary". Meaning, the "In Review" label is not there. So, we go back to iTunes and try uploading it there once again...and this little )(*&*&^% comedy goes on easily taking an hour or more each time we try to upload.
I used to think that Mr Softie was a big ball of ****, but trust me, Apple is FAR worse than Mr Softie ever was. At least with Mr Softie you can decipher the error message that with Apple are cryptic at best. And, if you have a problem, they get back to you within 24 hours AND give you a support ticket.
Thank God Apple has only a 10% market share.
If they had more we all would really be screwed.
1984?
Big Brother?
Its Apple...although the original MAC ad would have you think otherwise.

I submitted mine on the 24th and it's still in review...
Most of the apps are reviewed within 2 weeks however, it will also depend on who is reviewing your application. Let's just hope for a positive feedback for your application. Good Luck!
