Write a good app and hope it gets noticed. The What's Hot list rotates round every 2 or 4 weeks, I can't remember the exact figures. You start at the front of the list, slowly move along, then drop off. Same with the Staff Favourites (which I was on), but that's only 2 weeks IIRC.

I'm not sure... My app wasn't all that famous until yesterday when [based on 2/02/10] reports, it spiked into the top 10 of Reference categories, skyrocketing from like 200. So i think a lot of downloads in a short period of time, triggers your app to land on the list. Unpackr's second day on it. Enjoy!

This will tell you that your app may be featured in some stores but not others. Mine a couple of days ago got a huge boost from being on New and Noteworthy, then What's Hot and is now a Staff favourite! Not sure what all that means in terms of exposure, but it's all good!

Well, you do have to get lucky - but what we have found that helps:
1. Good reviews on iTunes, and a good overall star rating
2. Being a paid app (many more paid apps get featured than free ones - Apple wants to promote apps that will make them money)
3. Build your own buzz - social media, PR, ads, etc - Apple helps those that help themselves.
4. Sacrifice a small goat while facing Cupertino and chanting "Enohpi, Enohpi, Enohpi" over and over.
