So I can get an Android phone for near free. Great! Where can I get one?
Or do you mean that only the source code is free and I have to build my own mobile phone. No, you mean that I can buy an Android phone from Motorola or HTC that costs as much as an iPhone.
Here is a news flash for you: iOS is also free. You buy an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and you get iOS for free and updates for two years. It is no different from Android, except that with Android you are lucky to get two weeks of updates if you ever get the latest version to begin with.
Nobody is taking over anything. Not iOS, not Android, not any other mobile OS. iOS devices (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) still outsell Android devices.
There is also soon a vastly superior alternative to Android that is also free and even more open than Android: MeeGo (backed by Nokia and Intel). Are you aware that MeeGo phones will come with instructions to root the device. You can always install the latest builds. You can do whatever you want with it. Android will look like a prison camp compared to MeeGo.
The best scenario would be that there would still be competition and several alternatives.

The reason is very simple .. Android generally copies iOS and then gives it away for near free.
They are subsidizing it with their search revenue.
The only way for Apple to stop Android is via lawsuits.
As for other countries developing for Android.. It'll happen very soon.
I don't think Android will ever be better than iPhone though, but it will be more open, available, and accessible.
