The only sure-fire way to prevent cracking is to have all of the functionality be on your server and have the app be nothing more than a dummy client who can't run without your server sending it the necessary data.
This way, you can validate each time the app is run, you are validating constantly, and you can also have complete freedom to change the way it works on your server without messing with the iPhone app itself.
This is how all MMO games work, but it's probably not worthwhile for 99% of simple iPhone apps.

Not quite. Each game is sold with a unique identifier (cdkey), and this identifier combined with the fact that the game is played off the server makes it unsuited for piracy.
On the iPhone, we can run everything off a server, but we have no identifier that can help us identify legit purchasers from crackers, so we don't know who is pirating and who isn't.

I'm suggesting that you let them download the app for free and pay to get a key from your server. So there's no need to crack the app. When they register for this key, you pair their key with the device ID (which is unique). The server validates this key/deviceID pair each time they run the app.
When you have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod you can download a program via Cydia called Installous. You can type in the name of an app and if someone has cracked it (looks like most of them have) you can download it in a matter of minutes. Search on YouTube for it and see how easy it is.
How can we go about shutting this app down?

the problem is that the app isn't illegal. the site it get's its info from (*****o.us) is hosted in the Netherlands and is also legal there (since it links to file hosters only)
After two days in the app store my Analytics show 300% more users than my app store reports. I these are all cracked versions. What kind of numbers are you guys seeing?
Appulous has disabled pinging. And yes, there is about 500 hacking attempts in an hour so if you want to crash us you need to come up with something far more efficient.
But why? Developers have spent many hours creating apps just to have them cracked by some idiots who don't want to spend like $1 on a app!

Well, I followed your link, which led to the appulo* site, and noticed a few things. Things like:
"Recently we've had a handful of members start mirroring apps hoping to make cash off of their links"
"Unfortunately, some of our greedier users started posting links to these sites due to payment benefits they offered"
"Rapidshare, Megaupload, SendSpace BLOCKED
These domains have an apparently automated system for removing our links automatically"
I guess the old saying about honor among thieves just isn't true. Go Figure...
Don't really know if "Rapidshare, Megaupload, SendSpace" have automated measures, but the multiple DMCA requests sent to them everyday listing them as the host seem to help. Also it helps if the Web Site host is in America and you CC the DMCA requests to their abuse department, bye bye Ap*Hack*.
