ad hoc distribution testing without itunes synch

Hi,
Can anyone confirm if we can do ad hoc distribution testing of an app through xcode organizer, instead of synching the phone through itunes? If i have a secondary (non-development) phone with me, I can connect it to my mac and see it in xcode Organizer. There, I see a list of applications that are on the phone, with a + and - button below it. I'm trying to add the distribution build for the app through this. I'm not sure if this is expected to work.

Incidentally, I'm running into the "app could not be verified errors", whether through itunes synch or xcode organizer. But organizer would be a faster way to test it (rather than going through itunes) so I want to know if this is actually expected to work or not.
