I am a local and I am used to those homeless. They don't bother me at all.
And occasionally, you will see some homeless people whom you would willingly give money to - like those who are performing music at (underground) Muni/BART stations. There are people with amazing talent. In that case, please do drop a dollar or two.

Quite possibly the mistake I made was talking. I wasn't around other people and had macbook pro on me which freaked me out even more. I just had never had someone be so persistent before.
The locals that play music are great. There was one guy that was playing drums yesterday. He is extremely talented... I did leave him some cash. I also offered a homeless guy my breakfast sandwich the other day that I hadn't eaten yet. He was extremely thankful. I guess I was just spooked a little this morning.. thats all.
