That could be the case but when you are interviewing developers you have the choice to look at all of their past work - and it tells you when a rating is not included or private. With oDesk you can contest a bill as well whenever the work agreed upon is not executed as expected - this gives you way more leverage than other platforms. oDesk does take 11% for hosting transaction between you and the developer. Definitely something to consider as well.
