It takes a lot of downloads for a free app to rank in the top 10, especially in the US AppStore. My "Battery Fun" app was downloaded thousands of times a day when I switched it from $0.99 to Free and it did not even come close to the Top 50.
Recently my paid app was for half of a day to rank #8 in Romania...
This only a very few downloads (price of a pizza) to get there.
