Default iPhone Google Map integration

I have been looking around and was surprised to see that the iPhone does not come with an API to control mapping as the Android platform does (it is kind of obvious that Google supports it...)
I have looked around and could only find a set of classes wrapping the Google javascript calls emulating the Android Mapview.
On the other end, a few applications available on the appstore seem to integrate pretty well with the Google Map service without all the negative aspects heard on performance.
I have also heard that there may be a hidden Mapkit API in the iPhone?
Lastly, some applications perform some tricks such as launching a dialog box when you click on a Google Map marker. How is it done??

Thanks for sharing some light on this
