I'd suggest there was probably an installation problem with XCode. Did you install it over an old version? Try an uninstall, restart, install cycle.

Thank you for writing, but is this really the only solution? I am a little concerned about uninstalling Xcode; that it might have some impact on my files.
Do you know of another way to do this? Or to find the other iPhone OS systems that xcode prefers?
