I agree with the idea that an update is to improve and not spam; but the problem is; us good guys who believe that are going to get buried by the spam devs. They are just going to release all their updates as new clone apps and clog the process even worse then before. If you don't believe me, take a look; it has already begun.
I firmly believe in updating with good content; but I also firmly believe in having food on my table. I hear a lot of people say "spend 2k on advertising", well I for one have actually gone the "outside adverting" route and only have gotten moderate ROI (I also work at marketing/advertising firm at my day job and therefore at least have some idea what I am doing). The truth, however you want to slice it is; that popping up on the release list with your feature filled update was still the best way to increase revenue.
Spending a month or two on a good update only to make a few hundred bucks from it because it is invisible to the only marketing channel that really works well is NOT sustainable.
Again, this might be a good idea, as is; if there were NO spam devs...but that's just naivety; as I stated, it has already begun. If apple adds another "recently updated" list then I am fine; then its the best of both worlds.
